Remembering Jeff Parks | A Legacy of People, Purpose & Organizational Excellence

One year ago today, I lost a strategic business partner, a mentor, a friend, and someone who left an indelible mark on my life and career.

I never really had the opportunity to publicly acknowledge Jeff Parks’ passing, and today feels like the right time to honor him, share a little about the man he was, and celebrate the impact he continues to have on me.

I still remember meeting Jeff in January 2017 at Philadelphia Tavern in Manassas. He welcomed me with such openness and kindness, and before long, he was sharing all of his “Jeff Junk” with me. Little did I know that this meeting would mark the beginning of a partnership that would shape so much of my professional journey.

Together, we brought our strengths to the table, won an RFP, and began doing work that mattered. Jeff was the relationship builder; I was the get-r-done person. He had a way of connecting with people, seeing possibilities, and building trust. I brought the drive to turn ideas into action. We had our share of hiccups along the way, but we figured things out, leaned into our strengths, and made a meaningful difference in the organizations, leaders, and communities we served.

And through it all, Jeff taught me things I still carry with me every day.

“Effectiveness before efficiency.” or "Organizational Excellence needs to be in the goals."

I still hear those words in my head more often than he probably ever imagined. And whenever I start getting too caught up in the “nit-nit,” I can almost hear him reminding me to step back and focus on what really matters.

Because for Jeff, organizational excellence was never just about processes, performance, or the bottom line. It was about people. Relationships. Potential. Helping organizations become better by helping the people within them succeed. He understood that meaningful, sustainable results come from bringing people together around a purpose and creating the conditions for them to thrive.

Some of my favorite memories weren't even about the work. They were the drives to client engagements, the conversations about family and life, and the moments when we got to know each other beyond our professional roles. Those are the memories that remind me how fortunate I was to have him in my life.

I only wish we had found that perfect gig in New Zealand together. 🌏 That dream is still out there, and someday, I hope to make it happen. When I do, I'll be taking a piece of Jeff with me.

This past year has been challenging in ways I didn't fully anticipate. Independent consulting can be a lonely road sometimes, and there have been plenty of moments when I wished I could pick up the phone, share a challenge, get his perspective, or simply hear what he had to say. I miss having him in my corner.

But every now and then, something reminds me that his influence is still here. The word Breakthroughs has a funny way of showing up on my screen or finding its way into my day. Maybe it's coincidence. Maybe it's my own way of recognizing the lessons he left behind. Either way, I smile, think of Jeff, and feel a little less alone.

I hope I continue to make him proud. I hope he knew how much he influenced my life, my career, and the way I approach the work we both cared so deeply about. And I hope that, in some small way, I am carrying forward the best of what he taught me.

Jeff, thank you for your generosity, your wisdom, your friendship, your willingness to share what you knew, and your unwavering belief in the power of people and organizational excellence. Thank you for the opportunities, the lessons, the laughter, and even the “Jeff Junk.” I wouldn't trade any of it.

You are missed more than words can fully express, and you will never be forgotten.

Here's to continuing the work, building meaningful relationships, creating breakthroughs, and putting effectiveness before efficiency.

I'll keep cultivating people, generating results, and carrying a little bit of you wherever the road takes me. ❤️
